County of Fortune Construction Points: Production Guide

Quick answer

Open the Construction Points display in the top-right corner of the main bar and hover it — the detailed tooltip shows each point type's production chain, where production happens in the region, and how much of the corresponding construction material is in storage. That tooltip is the fastest way to work out which type of County of Fortune construction points you are short of and why, which is the core of managing the whole system.

The three types of points

The developers have said construction points were the most misunderstood feature of the Next Fest demo, and the mechanic mixes several similar concepts. According to players on a community wiki, the system breaks down into three types, each produced differently and each consumed by different work:

TypeSourceMain useShortage fix
Free pointsLimited pool that slowly regeneratesEarly construction; can substitute for carpentry pointsWait for the pool, or build the real guild chain
Carpentry pointsCarpenter's guild processing logsWood buildings, roads and maintenanceExpand the guild, secure logs, add workers
Masonry pointsMason's guild processing stoneCommoner buildings, stone roads, maintenanceExpand the guild, secure stone, upgrade roads selectively

Free points: a small early-game reserve

As the wiki's players describe them, free points form a pool that regenerates slowly over time and can stand in for carpentry points while you build — handy in the opening, before any carpenter's guild exists.

The pool is small, so direct it at buildings that unlock the next production chain, such as a workshop, a guild or a market, and save it from decorative roads. Nepos Games' QoL Improvements #2 post of 2026-10-08 also confirms you can now apply free points partway through construction, not only when placing the building, so a stalled project can be topped up instead of demolished.

How carpentry and masonry points are produced

Regular points are a production chain, not a stockpile you simply top up:

  • Carpentry points are made by a carpenter's guild turning logs into them, with the logs coming from a logging camp. They act as the region's basic building currency, and upkeep draws on them too. A guild short of workers or logs drags down every wooden structure and road around it.
  • Masonry points are made by a mason's guild from stone. Many Commoner buildings need them, as does keeping stone roads maintained. Community guides point out that stone is harder to move and far more location-bound than wood, which is why they flag masonry as the choke point once the mid-game arrives. A region without its own stone has to import it — meaning a second region with a quarry linked by a river route. In the demo, rafts carry stone downstream only; Early Access adds ports and sailboats able to travel both ways.
  • Second tier buildings need masons. A player in the Steam discussion forums notes that a mason's guild is required to make the build points needed to construct second tier buildings — if a placed building never seems to progress, missing masonry capacity is a likely cause.

Whichever guild you run, output is capped by three things working together: the capacity of the guild building itself, whether enough workers fill it, and whether the raw material keeps arriving on schedule. Practical responses include founding a second guild or enlarging the first, unlocking more valid recipes, and staffing the building more fully — equipment can help there.

Where points are spent — including invisible upkeep

Points are not just a build cost. Buildings and roads require ongoing maintenance, and this is the part that quietly causes most shortages:

  • A damaged road shows reduced speed, and its tooltip lists the maintaining settlement plus the monthly masonry drain it imposes.
  • Players on the community wiki warn that paving every road in stone can bleed masonry points dry and freeze new construction. Their advice: reserve stone paving for the routes that actually move food and building supplies, and let quiet paths stay dirt.
  • When a road turns damaged, get it repaired or scale up the mason's guild before you go founding another settlement.

Reading the UI

Since the September 2026 update described in the official Construction Points Overview on Steam News:

  • All Construction Point types are displayed directly in the main bar in the top-right corner, so you can immediately see how many of each type are available in the region.
  • The bar greys out the type that is not relevant at the moment and gives a clear warning when the available amount of either type drops to zero.
  • Hovering the bar opens a detailed tooltip showing how the system works, the production chain, where production takes place within the region, and how much of the corresponding construction material is in storage.

Read the tooltip against the chain: plenty of logs in storage but no carpenter's guild means build the guild; a guild present but no logs means fix the logging chain upstream. The full game listing lives on the official Steam page, where Early Access began on November 5, 2026.

Fixing a shortage

  1. Name the type

Free, carpentry or masonry? The top bar tells you which one has dropped or is greyed out.
  2. Trace the raw material

Carpentry runs on logs, masonry on stone. Ask three questions: is it being produced, is any of it sitting in storage, and does it actually arrive at the guild?
  3. Inspect the guild

Look at staffing levels, its efficiency rating, and whether unused recipe slots remain.
  4. Ease the demand side

Temporarily halt projects that can wait, push road upgrades back, or reduce a settlement's level until the balance recovers.
  5. Grow the supply side

Founding another guild or hiring more workers can cost less time than idling until the pool refills.

Next steps

If you are working through a shortage, the underlying supply chains matter more than the guild building itself: our production chains guide explains how raw goods flow into workshops, and the resources guide covers where deposits like stone and forest actually appear on the map. If you are deciding which settlements can support guild workers, the mayors guide explains how settlement leadership affects growth.

FAQ

How do I get more carpentry points?

Put up a carpenter's guild — or enlarge the one you have — and keep it fed with logs. Community guides suggest that valid recipes and a full workforce raise its efficiency. If building still stalls, confirm the guild has maintenance headroom and that logs are actually arriving.

How do I get more masonry points?

Stand up or enlarge a mason's guild and route stone to it. Players on the community wiki note that a range of Commoner buildings depend on masonry points, as does upkeep on stone roads. Regions with no local stone typically import it from a quarry elsewhere, moved downstream by river.

Can free construction points be used once a building is underway?

Yes — the game supports topping up an in-progress build with free points. When the system launched, they could only be committed at placement; Nepos Games removed that restriction in the QoL update of 2026-10-08 so projects that stall can be rescued.

Why does my road show as damaged?

Road upkeep depends on a working mason's guild. When the masonry balance turns negative, or when the guild lacks workers, pavement deteriorates and travel on it slows. Compare the road's own tooltip with the masonry readout in the top bar to see which side of the chain broke.
